About the AuthorBorn in 1924 in Buzu, Romania, Mico Kaufman survived forced labor during WWII, escaping the country after the war. Sanford Saltus Award “for distinguished achievement in the field of the art of the medal” by the American Numismatic Society. He studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, Italy, before immigrating to the United States in 1951.Kaufman is the only sculptor to receive commissions to design four official inaugural medals; he created Gerald Ford’s vice presidential and presidential medals; Ronald Reagan’s presidential medal, from life; and George H.
