In 1839 Louis Jacques Mande unveiled the daguerreotype upon the world and it became possible to produce erotic images of real women taken in real time. It offers sketches of the studios, the photographers, the models, and captures the costumes, sets, and props. This book follows the technological evolution in the medium from the fragile daguerreotype to the first printed cabinet cards and the mass market saucy postcards. It explains the experiments that allowed the introduction of color and the illusion of three dimensions and movement into the medium, and the shifting balance between the demands of the market and the strictures of the law. Above all, this book offers delightful photographs of women from past eras and creates a timeline of sensuality and eroticism. The authors acknowledge and delve into the issues of commercial, racial, and sexual exploitation that were present from those earliest days of erotic photography until today, but Peep Show Pinups is also a celebration of sensuality, fun, style, and joie de vivre in what may be regarded as its golden era.. After its first stumbling technical steps, this new medium of photography opened up unforeseen worlds, including the world of glamour and eroticism, to a mass market. Probably the biggest bargain in the field of vintage erotic photography! Nachtjager I was really surprised by this one! It's a large format book printed on superbly high quality paper and it's filled with fantastic images front-to-back. The front 1/4 of the book does an excellent job at laying out the history of erotic photography, both from the standpoint of why it was done (obvious reasons) and more importantly, how it was done and how the means to distribute these images and their formats changed as time progressed. Actually, this is probably the best bang-for-the-buck book I've yet encountered on this subject. Typically, books dealing with this subject are small format or done in glued paperback form - not so here. . Vintage Erotica Tarot said If you're curious where these photos came from. Well, of course you can find better collections on the internet, silly! You can find gigabytes of antique erotica on the INTERNET! Because even 100 years ago, men didn't through away porn.We recommend this book not just for the photographs--it's wonderful to see them printed on quality paper from clear images--but mostly for the information about the photographers, photography, the cultural influences, censorship, and what little we know about the models. I just wish there was more.. C. F. said Great reference material. This book is basically a large catalogue of erotic/naughty photos, with some history, etc. Large book with color photos, pages and pages worth. It seems to go on and on with many similar pics in terms of pose and subject material, but it is very thorough and a great resource for anyone into vintage/pinup/photography.
