REMARKS BY HELEN EXUM Ms Ghost Everyone has a life story, but the story behind the life of June Scobee Rodgers is not only a surprise, but it is hard to believe. One sees her today as the nationally known widow of Commander Dick Scobee who was killed when NASA's Challenger exploded in 1986. She celebrated the lives of the Challenger crew by creating Challenger Centers to inspire young people to learn about science and space.June's childhood is the surprise. June grew up in a dysfunctional family - at times homeless, moving constantly, experiencing the harsh cruelty of poverty, and trying to understand why her mother was in and out of the mental hospitals. P. Leestma - Space Teacher Through such warmth, compassion, honesty, and generosity of spirit, June Scobee Rogers shares her story from the challenges of the beginning of her life through that fateful day, to the positive, life lessons learned which motivates her to continue on in celebration of education and the Challenger Centers. June's story is "silver lined" with heart felt inspiration as only an educator can share. Those old enough to remember where they were when they heard about the Challenger disaster, experiencing such sadness and loss, knowing many space lessons were waiting to be taught, will have such a sense of gratitude and pride for t. Silver Linings I gave this book to my step-brother. The author, June Scobee is a long-lost cousin to my step-brother. He is a product of divorced parents and did not know anything of the paternal side of his family. This book brings him a little closer to that paternal side of his family. The author of this book was actually his cousin. That makes him a cousin by marriage to the commander of the space shuttle. Thanks
