Fascinating character study, but not an easy read Kathy Cunningham Javier Marias’s THUS BAD BEGINS is an extraordinary examination of human morality. The story is narrated by 23-year-old Juan de Vere, a student who is working as an assistant to film director Eduardo Muriel in Madrid in 1980. Muriel is a fascinating character – odd and enigmatic, but richly developed. When he asks de Vere to investigate a possible scandal . Fairly amazing; a "mind expanding" experience! Hans Castorp First thing is this is not a typical Best Seller type novel. Comparable perhaps to heavyweights like Musil, Mann, and Proust from the past, and other European contemporaries; in a word: Nobel contender. I have read __The Infatuations__ another somewhat dense winner by this fairly amazing Spaniard. All kinds of eavesdropping with our youngish male narrator who happens . Sesho said WHAT'S UP WITH YOUR WIFE?. Most of the novel is a mystery as its protagonist tries to figure out exactly why his employer treats his loving wife like a dog and the novel only slowly and begrudgingly reveals its cause.
